August 2026 eCommerce News and Updates for Sellers

This article was last updated on August 12th, 2026.

Marketplace rules and platform features move fast, and a fee revision, a title-length cap, or a new fulfillment threshold can quietly reshape your margin and your search ranking before you notice it happened. Staying current is one of the cheapest forms of protection a seller has.

This guide is updated every week with the latest eCommerce news and seller-relevant platform changes across Amazon, Shopify, Walmart, eBay, and TikTok Shop, newest items first.

August 2026 Updates

Week of August 11, 2026

  • Amazon now requires sellers to tag product images and A+ Content that feature photorealistic AI-generated people, adding the keyword "contains-synthetic-performer" to the image file's XMP metadata before upload, with real people, AI-edited real people, and non-photorealistic figures all exempt. (source)
  • TikTok Shop is tightening enforcement of fulfillment metrics and behaving more like a delivery-performance marketplace than a pure social channel, recommending sellers keep Late Dispatch Rate at or below 4% and On-Time Delivery Rate at or above 80%. (source)
  • AI shopping agents increasingly favor listings with clean, complete product data, making it worth auditing your top SKUs for accurate attributes and pricing as agentic checkout spreads across ChatGPT and Google. (source)

Week of August 4, 2026

  • TikTok Shop is testing a paid membership called Shop Plus that mirrors Amazon Prime and Walmart+, bundling free shipping, discounts, and coupons for a monthly fee at tiered price points of $6, $10, and $15, a shift from impulse buys toward repeat purchasing. (source)
  • Amazon posted its first-ever $200 billion quarter, with net sales up 20% year over year to $200.6 billion and advertising up 26% to $19.8 billion, a signal that demand is accelerating even as pay-to-play pressure on organic visibility holds. (source)
  • eBay closed its acquisition of Depop, paying Etsy $1.4 billion and pledging to run the UK resale platform as a complementary business while keeping the Depop brand, platform, and customer experience intact. (source)

FAQs

Does Amazon's new AI-image rule mean I have to label every AI-generated image?
No. The requirement applies only to images and A+ Content that show photorealistic AI-generated people. Real people, real people whose photos were edited with AI, non-photorealistic or cartoon figures, and images with no people in them are all exempt. If a qualifying image applies, you add the keyword "contains-synthetic-performer" to the file's XMP metadata using an IPTC-compatible editor before you upload it, and Amazon then shows shoppers a disclosure where relevant.

What TikTok Shop fulfillment numbers should I be watching right now?
The two thresholds most worth auditing are Late Dispatch Rate and On-Time Delivery Rate. TikTok recommends keeping Late Dispatch Rate at or below 4%, with enforcement able to kick in above 10%, and it asks sellers to hold On-Time Delivery Rate at or above 80%. The wider point is that TikTok Shop is now judging sellers on whether the customer actually received the order on time, not just whether you shipped it, so a printed label without a timely carrier scan can still count against you.

How much will TikTok Shop Plus cost, and is it live yet?
TikTok Shop Plus is still a test, not a finalized program, so nothing is locked in. During the experiment TikTok has been trying three monthly price points, $6, $10, and $15, with the membership bundling free shipping, discounts, and coupons in the same vein as Amazon Prime and Walmart+. For sellers the takeaway is strategic: a membership rewards repeat purchasing, so the game shifts from winning the viral first order toward keeping the customer who comes back.

Why does Amazon's $200 billion quarter matter for my store?
It is a demand signal. Amazon's net sales rose 20% year over year to $200.6 billion, its first quarter above $200 billion, which points to accelerating shopper demand heading into the back half of the year. The same report showed advertising up 26% to $19.8 billion, a reminder that competition for visibility keeps getting more expensive, so rising demand does not automatically translate into easier organic ranking.

I sell on Depop or eBay. What changes now that the acquisition closed?
For now, very little changes day to day. eBay completed the acquisition, paying Etsy roughly $1.4 billion, and has said it will run Depop as a complementary business while keeping the Depop brand, platform, and customer experience intact. The changes worth watching are the ones eBay may introduce later as it looks for synergies between the two marketplaces, so it is worth keeping an eye on fee, shipping, and policy updates on either platform over the coming months.

What does "getting product data ready for AI shopping agents" actually involve?
It means making sure the AI assistants shoppers increasingly use can read and trust your listings. Agents tend to favor products with clean, complete, accurate data, so the practical steps are auditing your top SKUs for correct attributes, titles, and pricing, and then testing whether your products even surface when you ask ChatGPT or Google's AI mode about your category. Note that OpenAI wound down its native in-chat Instant Checkout earlier in 2026 and shifted ChatGPT toward product discovery, so the durable priority is discoverability and data quality rather than any single checkout feature.

How often is this page updated?
Every week. New items are added to the top with the newest first, and the "last updated" date at the top of the page reflects the most recent refresh. For the same seller news even sooner, The Merchant Memo delivers it to your inbox before it reaches this page.

A couple of notes. Each answer is tied to a specific item on the page and stays consistent with the verified facts, including the correction that ChatGPT's native Instant Checkout is no longer live, so the FAQ won't reintroduce the stale claim we already caught.
